July 2017 Womens' Spa Retreat

The Second Annual "Ladies Who Litigate" LADC Womens' Retreat took place on July 11-12, 2017, which included 4 hours of CLE credit on ethics and professionalism, a cocktail party, dinner, and breakfast.

The featured speaker was Brigid Schulte, author of Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time. Ms. Schulte was on leave from her position as a Washington Post staff writer and reporter to serve as a Fellow at the New America Foundation. She was part of the team covering the Virginia Tech massacre, which was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news journalism. She has also been a national correspondent for the Knight-Ridder Washington Bureau and holds an MS from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

A full-time journalist, mother of three, and married to another full-time journalist, Ms. Schulte’s book explores the constant juggle of career and leisure time, comparing cultural norms from across the globe. Her goal in publishing the book, and speaking to us, was to open a dialogue about shifting the national conversation from “Mommy Issues” to “Life Issues”. The discussion was both lively and provocative. Her presentation "Finding Time for Work, Love, and Play: A Call to Pause" resonated with each member of the audience, regardless or age or experience. In fact, the discussion was so stimulating that the allotted time was insufficient for everyone to ask their questions, so we were forced (by popular demand) to go over time.

The first official CLE session commenced at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2014. However, many joined the LADC earlier in the day by booking a spa treatment and mingling with colleagues at an LADC Women’s “Open House” in the Spa Café from noon till 3:00 pm. On Friday evening, the group regrouped for cocktails at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner in the beautiful Crescent View Room. Saturday morning, they gathered again for breakfast and three hours of CLE. With a break at noon, everyone was given an opportunity to spend the balance of the weekend with family and friends.

The cost to attend this conference was $279 for members and $299 for non-members, and the special negotiated room rate was $149 at the Ritz.
