Stiff Backs, Rear Impacts, and Spine Biomechanics

In several degenerative spinal diseases, a stiff spine is often accompanied by increased curvature, loss of bone quality, and weaker bone structure. These alterations can affect the spine’s biomechanical response and thus increase the risk of spinal injury, even in minor trauma. This heightened injury risk is particularly acute in the kind of spinal loading that occupants may experience in rear impacts. This can result in serious injuries, including fractures and dislocations, with or without spinal cord injuries and paralysis. In this webinar, the presenters will discuss how the combination of increased spinal curvature and localized stiffness can lower the spine’s injury tolerance even when exposed to minimal loading, such as “spine-straightening” against one’s seatback that occurs in a rear impact.

Speakers
Dr. Chantel Parenteau is in Exponent’s Biomechanics Practice based in Detroit.  Dr. Parenteau has more than 30 years-experience in automotive safety, providing valuable information to the crash safety community. While working in the automotive industry in the US and Europe, in academia, and as a consultant, she has actively conducted a wide breadth of biomechanical research projects resulting in more than 120 technical peer-reviewed publications, as well as numerous patents and patent-related publications.
Dr. Parenteau provides expertise in the areas of biomechanics, occupant kinematics, human tolerance, and injury mitigation. Her work includes analysis of traumatic injury associated with crashes as well as sports.

Dr. Jacob Fisher is in Exponent’s Biomechanics Practice based in Philadelphia.  Dr. Fisher addresses issues related to human injury biomechanics. He performs biomechanical accident reconstruction based on injury mechanisms to reconstruct the physical environment in which injury occurs and to illuminate critical timing issues regarding when and the order in which injuries occur during an accident sequence. His expertise includes injury causation and mechanisms of traumatic injuries associated with vehicular, pedestrian, occupational, and recreational accidents, as well as consumer products, including analysis of alternative design proposals. His work has ranged from reconstructing high-speed pedestrian accidents to analyzing scenarios leading to falls from heights. He has investigated a wide array of motor vehicle accidents and injury and timing issues related to performance of vehicular components like air bags, seat backs, and belt restraints.
