Design-Build projects often involve fixed-price contracts based on preliminary designs, leading to potential disputes between Contractors and Design Subcontractors when costs or complexity exceed expectations. Contractors may challenge tender designs, raise claims regarding scope, responsibility for quantity estimation, detail level, compliance, and anticipated site conditions. As design advances and construction begins, assumptions change, causing disagreements about scope, coordination, reasons for design changes, and justification of claims. Proactive identification and clear negotiation can help prevent issues, while expert input is valuable for resolving technical disputes.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Amoroso holds engineering licenses in ten states and brings broad experience in civil and structural engineering design and consulting across transportation, industrial, and commercial construction. He has contributed to the pre-award design for a major new highway project in Texas during its pursuit phase, acted as an independent technical reviewer for bridge design- build projects on I-12 and I-10 in Louisiana, and provided consulting on design-build project disputes in California, Utah, Colorado, Texas, South Carolina, and internationally in the Middle East. Dr. Amoroso’s expertise also includes conducting failure analysis, investigating construction defects, and determining the causes of damage in buildings and other structures. He earned both his bachelor’s and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from LSU and has served as an adjunct instructor in the LSU Civil Engineering Department since 2008.
