May 5, 2022 at 12:00 pm via Zoom -- Sponsored by Exponent -- Concussion: Biomechanical Approaches to Evaluation
What does it mean to sustain a concussion? How is a concussion diagnosed in the clinic? How can the likelihood of concussion be objectively evaluated? Why don’t woodpeckers get TBI?
Significant biomechanical research efforts have yielded relationships between the risk of concussion and acceleration-based head injury metrics. These relationships can be used to quantify the likelihood of concussion in a variety of incident types. Relevant head acceleration data required to evaluate concussion risk may be available from scientific and field studies. If testing specific to an incident needs to be performed, there are reliable, repeatable methods and instrumentation for collecting the relevant data. While some questions remain, and litigating concussion claims can be a challenge, concussions have been studied extensively by the biomechanics community, providing objective scientific evidence surrounding their etiology. This presentation will include an overview of concussion injuries and how questions of occurrence and relation to involved products may be addressed from a biomechanical perspective with case studies of various head impact scenarios.
